Subseasonal Tidal Variability in the Gulf of Tonkin Observed by Multi-Satellite Altimeters and Tide Gauges

Exploring multi-timescale tidal variability is fundamental and necessary for numerous practical purposes, such as flood protection, marine cultivation, ocean transport. It well known that tides show significant seasonal, inter-annual, 18.61-year nodal variability. Less less discussed the subseasonal (i.e., ter-annual, quarter-annual, penta-annual cycles) in coastal ocean. In this study, we explore modulations Gulf of Tonkin via combination four tide gauges 27-year multi-satellite altimeter observations. Both satellite altimeters indicate subseasonality Tokin, although amplitudes variations are much smaller than those seasonal variations. Compared to spatially limited gauges, successfully derive basin-scale Tonkin. The largest amplitude constituents originated from main constituents, can reach high 31.8 mm. suggested environments (e.g., sea levels stratification) induce through changing propagation dissipation. Although powerful, also have some defects. Due aliasing related long-period sampling intervals, indistinguishable records.
